Colloquium Title:
Topological data analysis
Reception at 3:00 p.m. in 241 SH / Talk at 3:30 in 61 SH

Topology has many applications. It allows one to recognize shapes, but allows for distortions. Hence topology has been used to study the shape of noisy data. The data analysis company Ayasdi uses topological data analysis in a variety of real-life applications. Their main software tool, TDA mapper, uses ideas from topology to create a graph that gives a simplified representation of data. But the software requires the user to make many parameter choices.  Dr. Darcy will give an elementary introduction to Ayasdi’s TDA mapper and discuss how ideas from persistent homology can be used to determine robust parameter choices.
