This year- 23,989 undergraduates are enrolled at the UI.
The University of Iowa again welcomes its most academically accomplished class in its history.
This fall’s incoming undergraduate class at the University of Iowa has again topped previous records in achievement with a higher average high school GPA, at 3.71, than any previous class.
“I’m delighted to welcome this outstanding new class to a campus full of possibilities,” says Sue Curry, interim UI executive vice president and provost. “The opportunity to learn and thrive at a major research university will be transformative. In the coming years, these students will make lifelong friendships, acquire new knowledge, and develop important professional skills. We are committed to supporting them and celebrating their successes every step of the way.”
We caught up with a few new faces from the Class of 2022 as they began their academic journeys at Iowa. Learn about their interests, ambitions, and what made them choose to join the Hawkeye family.
The Class of 2022 is composed of 4,806 students and comes after three years of efforts by university administration to manage enrollment growth. The Class of 2022 is about the same size as the Class of 2018, with about 140 more students.
About 21 percent of the class (1,015) are first-generation students.
“I am pleased to see so many of our incoming students are the first in their family to attend college,” says Melissa Shivers, vice president for student life and interim chief diversity officer. “First-generation college students carry with them not only their own dreams but often the hopes and ambitions of generations of family, something I know well from my own experience. We are proud to offer programs like Iowa Edge, which helps guide first-generation students during what can be an overwhelming orientation. The University of Iowa is committed to supporting all students and giving them every opportunity to thrive.”
About 58 percent of the class, or 2,801, are Iowa residents, and about 4 percent (185) are international students. The class represents 96 of Iowa’s 99 counties, 43 U.S. states (as well as Washington, D.C.; Puerto Rico; and bases for the U.S. Armed Forces), and 43 countries (including the U.S.).
This year, 23,989 undergraduates are enrolled at the UI. Total enrollment this fall is 31,656* students. About 47 percent of the UI’s students identify as male, about 53 percent as female. Graduate students total 5,826, and professional students total 1,841.
*The fall 2018 totals reflect, for the first time, a new counting methodology adopted by the Board of Regents, State of Iowa. Enrollment counts no longer include postgraduate scholars, so the enrollment total does not include the 1,292 postgraduate scholars at the UI.
