Congratulations to our graduate students, Cadine Adza, Lily Christenson, Natalie Schwartz, Kunfangyi Wu, and Yikai Zhang, whose outstanding performance in the 2025 Travelers University Modeling Competition earned their team ("404 Not Found") 3rd place among 44 teams!

Here's a summary from the team: "The 2025 Travelers UMC Competition was to develop a model that predicts subrogation from auto insurance claims, identify key indicators, and recommend how TriGuard Insurance can utilize these insights to optimize recovery processes. Combined with feature engineering and selection, our solution was an XGBoost model with native categorical support and class weighting. We ended up in 3rd place with an f1 score of .60, .10 points above the baseline model. We’re very happy with the experience this gave us working on a typical data science pipeline from start to finish, and for the opportunity to learn from and speak to Travelers data scientists.
