Biography

How did you hear about the internship?

I heard about the internship through doing research on the Actuarial Science & Risk Management career fair. I had initially missed the opportunity to apply for an interview in advance, so I brought my resume to the career fair and introduced myself to one of the Transamerica representatives. I explained my situation, shared my interest in the internship, and made my pitch in person. Fortunately, I was offered a time slot for an interview.

Why did you choose this particular internship?

The Transamerica internship initially appealed to me because of the proximity of the Cedar Rapids office to Iowa City. After having a great experience with the Transamerica representative at the career fair who helped me secure an interview, I felt confident knowing that I would be working with supportive and welcoming people. At the time, I did not know much about what actuaries do, so I was excited for any opportunity to learn more about the profession. My internship experience ended up being very positive. I gained a clearer understanding of what an actuary is and what they do, and I realized that it was a career path that I could see myself pursuing. I met many great people and began developing the business knowledge and technical skills that I wanted to continue growing. Because of this experience, I returned for a second summer internship, which ultimately led to landing a full-time position at Transamerica.

Why should Iowa students consider participating in this internship?

Transamerica offers a unique opportunity for Iowa students to stay in Iowa City during the summer while gaining meaningful professional experience. The internship program includes several events designed to help you connect with fellow interns - some of whom may also be University of Iowa students. There are also opportunities to learn about different areas of the company and connect with Transamerica employees to gain perspective from people who have already navigated the career path you are interested in. Most importantly, interns are given meaningful work that helps them develop their technical and communication skills, providing a strong foundation for future roles within the company.
