Learn about pursuing statistics, actuarial science, or data science at Iowa

The Bachelor of Science in Statistics requires a minimum of 120 semester hours, including at least 14 or 15 courses for the major, depending on the emphasis track chosen. Students complete 10 core courses that provide essential instruction in statistical methods, applications, and theory. In addition, they concentrate on their particular interest areas by choosing one of the following three emphasis tracks, in which they complete at least four or five courses.

Students should also:

  • Complete the fourth level of a single world language as needed for Iowa's General Education Program.
  • Students must complete the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences General Education Program.
  • Meet admission requirements for the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
  • The following courses can be taken prior to enrolling at the University of Iowa:
    • CS:1100 (22C:016) Computer Science I: Fundamentals (4 semester hours)
    • MATH:1850 (22M:025) Calculus I (4 semester hours*)
    • MATH:1860 (22M:026) Calculus II (4 semester hours*)
    • MATH:2700 (22M:027) Introduction to Linear Algebra (4 semester hours)
    • MATH:2850 (22M:028) Calculus III (4 semester hours)

*Equivalent transfer courses for Calculus I and II taken with 4 semester hours are acceptable for the program.
